Bunmahon knit in public day

Bunmahon World Wide Knit in Public Day:

In aid of Neonatal Unit in Waterford Regional Hospital:

Saturday the 8th of June 2013 from 10.30 until 2.30:

The purpose of the Bunmahon World Wide Knit in Public Day is to showcase the craft of hand knitting and bring knitters of all ages together. The proceeds of the event will go to the Neonatal Unit in Waterford Regional Hospital. Please join us at Knockmahon National School, Bunmahon on Saturday the 8th of June between 10.30 and 2.30. Come along and sponsor or knit a simple blanket for premature babies in the Neonatal Unit at Waterford Regional Hospital. Wool will be available on the day, just bring your 4mm needles. If you want to bring your unused yarn we will pass it along to knitters to make blankets and cardigans for the babies. The children from Knockmahon National Schools are already knitting for the premature babies. There will be a craft fair with local crafters selling the goods. For more information contact Niall McCann knitday@thewoolshop.ie or on 087-1442460.

Modern day knitting is more about individuality and community, with knitting circles becoming social gatherings. The growing trend of “stitch and bitch groups” are bringing knitters together in the real and virtual worlds. The internet is a huge resource, with blogs and sites where knitters can find inspiration, advice and supplies. Social networking allows knitters to showcase their work to other knitters across the world. The latest trend in knitting is to use specially designed yarns like Tivoli Whirl and Rico Can Can to make fashion scarves and other accessories. One ball equals one project is a big element of current knitting. The necessity to make do and mend of the 40s and 50’s is a distant memory. More people are knitting, finding it a relaxing and rewarding pastime. There is a great satisfaction in the ability to start and complete a hand knit project. Come to the Bunmahon World Wide Knit in Public Day at the Knockmahon National School, Bunmahon on Saturday the 8th of June.

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knit in Public Day is unique, in that it's the largest knitter run event in the world. Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers. They each organize an event because they want to, not because they have to. They bring their own fresh ideas into planning where the event should be held, and what people would like to do.

In the past some people have used this event as a means to show the general public that ‘not only grannies knit!’. Knit in Public Day is really about showing the general public that knitting can be a community activity in a very distinct way. In some places there are many different knitting groups that never interact with each other, on Knit in Public Day they come together in one place, making them hard to miss.

This year there will be over 200 events in Australia, China, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, United States in fact in every corner of the world.
