My career in yarns and crafts started when I was in secondary school and trying to earn some money. The art of knitting was handed down to me through generations of my family. From the time I could safely hold knitting needles my Granny taught me knit 1, purl 1. I was hooked! I inherited a knitting machine from my aunt Joan and thus began my introduction in becoming an entrepreneur. I knitted hats and scarves in a simple straightforward design. I made appointments with buyers. I walked from store to store with my samples and I was very successful. I worked long hours after school keeping up with orders. At one point my Granny was on my payroll.
From this success my confidence and appetite for being self- employed grew. I purchased an industrial sewing machine and added bean bags to my tiny home industry. As one thing led to another I began purchasing cones of yarn from a carpet manufacturer. These cones were end of colour lots. I bought approx 1000 kilos at a time. I rewound the cones into balls, weighed, packed and sold them from my home as knitting yarn. In 1990 I opened my own wool and craft shop in Bray,
Co Wicklow. The wool shop was known as the smallest, best stocked wool shop in Ireland and it got great reviews. My stock of yarns were extensive and as my business grew I introduced more and more crafts into the shop to compliment the yarns.
As my customer base grew, I saw another gap in the market and began teaching people to knit. The Irish Country Women's Association regularly invited me to give talks and advice on the different crafts. In 2006, after being in the retail business for nearly 16 years, I was approached by my landlords with a very generous offer to buy out my lease. So in April 2007, The Wool Shop, 71 Main Street, Bray, Co Wicklow closed with a lot of tears and many well wishes from customers near and far. I have since moved back to the area my family came from, Bunmahon, County Waterford. I still have not lost the appetite to work for myself. I am now running this online wool and craft shop, it is what I know best….Wool. So please buy your wool, yarn, crafts and handmade gifts online at my shop
